Visual Arts students at Solihull Sixth Form College have just returned from an overseas trip to Spain, where they visited museums, galleries and took in the architecture of the city of Barcelona.
The 4-day fieldtrip was open to learners on all four Visual Arts courses, including the Fine Art, Graphics & 3D Design and Photography pathways of the A level Art & Design course, as well as the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design Practice. This meant that the participating students each had a slightly different focus for the trip, depending on their area of interest.
The museums and galleries that the students visited included the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, where learners enjoyed the Romanesque, Gothic and Modern collections. They also visited the Museu Picasso, where they were able to see famous paintings such as Man in a Beret and The Embrace by Pablo Picasso.
Barcelona is also famous for its unique architecture, heavily influenced by Antoni Gaudi, and the students were able to see examples of this at the Park Güell and the Casa Milà (La Pedrera). Other stops on the trip included a guided tour of the famous La Sagrada Familia cathedral and a visit to Las Arenas. Learners also took a cable car trip, walked the famous Las Ramblas boulevard and enjoyed some leisure time at Barceloneta Beach.
Visual Arts Curriculum Leader Zoe Maksymiw commented:
“We are delighted to be able to offer our students the opportunity to visit a major European city each year. This year it was Barcelona and it offered learners the chance to immerse themselves in the culture of a truly beautiful city. There is so much to enjoy from a Visual Arts perspective, not only because of the museums and art galleries our young people visited, but also the architecture that was all around. What the students saw will influence their portfolios now that they are back in Solihull and I can’t wait to see the work they produce.”
