Visual Arts Exhibition 2023 — Solihull Sixth Form College

Visual Arts Exhibition 2023

Visual Arts students at Solihull Sixth Form College came together for a celebration of their work this week, as then end of year exhibition took place.

Every student on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design Practice and A level Art & Design courses exhibited their portfolios. The work shown covered a huge range of disciplines and specialisms from Fine Art painting to Textile Design, from Photography to Architecture and from Graphic Design to Installation. The work also explored a wide variety of subject matter and themes. Staff, students, parents, carers and special guests turned out in force for the Private View on a warm summer evening, with learners from our A level Music course performing to entertain guests too.

The Visual Arts department handed out awards to students at the Private View, with prizes given for all four Visual Arts courses (BTEC Art & Design practice, A level Art & Design – Fine Art, Graphics and Photography pathways). Among the students recognised for their outstanding work were Gabby Burman and Teagan Hinckes (Fine Art), Anna Kelly (Graphics), Leah Scarlett (Photography) and Connie Griffiths (BTEC Art & Design Practice), who each won Independent Learner accolades. Awards for the Visual Arts enrichment, which recognised commitment and critical self-appraisal, went to Summer Carter, Mikaeel Hafiz, Sohail Atify, Eve Rose Jackson, Cara Cox, Lydia Swift, Lola Boucher and Mia Barber. Finally, Casper Abosch and Aisha Abdirashed were recognised as Stars of the Department and a special award went to Mary Davidson, who is an ex-student who returned to work as a member of staff this year.

Creative Arts Curriculum Leader Zoe Maksymiw commented:

“It’s a monumental job to put on an exhibition of this type, but I’m so proud of the entire Creative Arts department, because the work on display was fantastic. The standard was highly professional, and it was extraordinary for visitors to see that our students are encouraged to make work that explores their passions and interests, with some really important issues being addressed. The sheer scale of some of the installations created this year impressed our guests.”
