This Town Screening — Solihull Sixth Form College

This Town Screening

Media Studies learners at Solihull Sixth Form College got an insight into the production of a television programme when they attended an exclusive screening of new BBC drama ‘This Town’ in March.

The students attended the event at Birmingham Town Hall at the invitation of BBC Young Reporters and were treated to an exclusive advanced screening of the first episode of the show, before the official premiere later that same day. The screening was followed by a question-and-answer session with the show’s creator Steven Knight, who is a British screenwriter, film and television producer and director best known for his work on ‘Peaky Blinders’. Also on the panel answering questions were Kudos Executive Producer, Katie McAleese and Kudos Knight Development Producer, Rem Conway. The event was completed with live music from Eddy Luna.

Media and IT Curriculum Leader Rasbinder Gill commented:

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our A Level Media Studies learners, who are studying Peaky Blinders as part of their course. Through the question-and-answer session, they were able to ask questions about the different job opportunities in the industry and the diverse ways each member of the panel started in the industry. It was inspiring for our young people to hear directly from people who have achieved such success in a field they have aspirations to be part of.”

The A level Media Studies course does not only focus on television; the course also focuses on newspapers, magazines and online digital media like websites and blogs. As part of this qualification, learners develop practical production skills and are required to produce their own media products.
