Physics Learners Challenged

Gifted Physics learners at Solihull Sixth Form College have been testing their abilities with a series of advanced academic challenges.

Four Year 13 A level Physics students took on the second round of the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad at the end of February, before a further 15 learners (from both Year 12 and Year 13) participated in the Senior Physics Challenge in March.

Although our students had not sat the paper in the first round of the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, they were permitted to take on this extremely challenging second round paper. It included problems far more difficult than they can expect on their A level Physics exams and provided a very significant test to their abilities.

The Senior Physics Challenge involved an hour-long paper with a set of questions aimed at testing learners knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Rick Homer, Physics teacher at the College, commented:

“I applaud all the young people who took on these papers. The questions involved in both papers involve very advanced level Physics and even the most able A level learners find them a significant challenge. However, it’s about giving it a go and trying to stretch themselves and the experience will stand them all in good stead for their A level examinations.”
