Music Composition Appraisal — Solihull Sixth Form College

Music Composition Appraisal

Music students at Solihull Sixth Form College received a masterclass in composing recently thanks to a visit from an eminent jazz musician.

Mark Goodchild, double bassist from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and an experienced jazz musician, came onto campus to give advice and feedback to Year 13 learners on their own compositions. Each composition was played to the group, with Mark giving his professional thoughts on the concept, structure, development and playability of each piece. Students were able to try out new ideas in their works and hear transformations immediately.

Music teacher Catherine Douglas commented:

“Many thanks to Mark for giving up his time to visit us and assist our young people with their compositions. The students have been working very hard on creating their own original music and getting constructive advice was very helpful.”

Composing forms 30% of the total A level Music grade, with the rest coming from performing and appraising existing music from a range of genres.

Many of the students own compositions will be played at the forthcoming Easter Showcase and Composition Exhibition on 21 March 2023 at 7.00pm in the College Theatre H201. Admissions is free, but there will be a retiring collection to raise money for the Music department.
