Humanities Research School students at Solihull Sixth Form College attended the Model UN COP 28 Climate Change Conference at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s Civic Suite in December.
Learners represented the USA and Uganda at the conference to debate key climate policies, as well as championing the progress the College has made in moving towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. During the debate, students spoke about which countries need to be leading the world towards reducing carbon emissions, the role of urban areas and technology in reducing emissions and the importance of considering indigenous people and small island states in our planning for a greener future. The need for collaboration between countries and the urgency of the situation really came across from all of the students in attendance.
Geography teacher Helen Evans, who is also working with the Environmental Society at the College, commented:
“Huge congratulations to all the students who took part in the Model United Nations event. They were the only learners who attended the Conference that presented a display board about the environmental policies of the College, which formed the second part of the event, following the morning debate.”
Alexandra Grunfeld, Geography Teacher, added:
“The students worked so well together and spoke eloquently about issues that they really care about. They have worked hard in the build up to the event to make sure their presentation and arguments were as good as they possibly could be and they did themselves and the College proud. It was a really inspiring event to be a part of.”
The Humanities Research School is an enrichment option, which means learners take part in activities once a week. It gives them the opportunity to complete an Extended Project Qualification, which is a piece of private research of their choice.
