Media, Film & IT Study Animation

Media, Film and IT students at Solihull Sixth Form College took a trip to the cinema recently to see an animated film as part of their studies.

Learners on the A level Media Studies and Film Studies courses, as well as BTEC Creative Digital Media Production and BTEC IT students saw the animation ‘The Red Turtle’ as part of National Schools Film Week. This professional work will help students focus on key theories for the A level written examination and will also provide some ideas for BTEC animation assignments.

‘The Red Turtle’ is a 2016 animated fantasy drama film directed by Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit and co-written with French screenwriter Pascale Ferran. It was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 89th Oscars. The film, which has no dialogue, tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and meets a giant red female turtle.

Media and IT Curriculum Leader Rasbinder Gill commented:

“Animation is just one genre of media that our learners study as part of their course, and this particular film offers them many useful insights, not least because the lack of dialogue means that the narrative is portrayed via other methods. It is a useful case study for our students to consider.”

Prospective learners, who are considering whether the BTEC Creative Digital Media Production Diploma or BTEC IT Diploma is the right course for them are encouraged to book a place on a Twilight Taster session on Tuesday 12 December 2023 (5.00 – 6.00pm). Bookings can be made at www.solihullsfc.ac.uk/tasters.
