HE & Enrichment at Open Day — Solihull Sixth Form College

HE & Enrichment at Open Day

Solihull Sixth Form College will be demonstrating how it acts as a stepping-stone between secondary school and Higher Education, training and employment, when it holds its Open Day on Saturday 21 October.

Prospective learners and their families are able to book Eventbrite tickets now to visit the campus between the hours of 9.30am – 3.30pm. These tickets are available free of charge.

As well as having teachers and current students available in all curriculum areas to talk about our wide range of courses, we will also have specialist staff members available to offer careers guidance. Our own Careers Adviser will be available throughout the day, as will representatives from three top universities. Staff from Aston, Leicester and Sheffield Universities will be present to offer advice on moving onto Higher Education and guide learners on their choice of subjects at A level, BTEC and T level. University is the top choice for our learners, with more than 70% progressing onto university after completing their studies with us.

As well as advice on course choices, visitors will also be able to find out about our wide range of enrichment options. These are activities that learners can sign up to alongside their main programme of study and can help learners develop the skills that universities and employers really value, as well as boosting their progression chances.

Among the academic enrichments on offer is a Pre-Medical School to support those aiming to apply for Medicine, a STEM Programme for those with Engineering ambitions and a Teaching Academy that runs with the help of the Summit Learning Trust’s SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training). Active enrichments include a range of sports and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, while the creative options include Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Creative Writing. Volunteering is a popular choice with Student Council, the Student Health Ambassador Scheme and our Team Gambia project.

College Principal Dr Martin Sullivan commented:

“For those learners in Year 11 who have not yet booked their tickets for Open Day on 21 October, I would urge them to guarantee their place as soon as possible. Tickets are going fast for this event, which is really encouraging. Young people have a great deal of choice in Birmingham and Solihull, and this event is the ideal opportunity for young people and their families to see what makes Solihull Sixth Form College a great post-16 option. With our own staff members and those we have coming in from Higher Education establishments, visitors can expect expert advice to help them make informed choices for their future.”
