Harry Potter Casts a Spell on Students

Film and Media learners at Solihull Sixth Form College visited the Warner Brother’s Harry Potter Studio Tour in London recently for an interactive workshop.

40 students went on the trip from the A level Film Studies and Media Studies courses, as well as the BTEC Creative Digital Media Production qualification. The focus was on Foley, which is the creation of everyday sound effects to be added to media in post-production. Learners got the opportunity to create their own auditory soundscapes.

Zoe, a Year 12 Creative Digital Media Production learners, commented:

“The Foley workshop was inspirational and gave me ideas of how I could create my own sound effects.”

Fellow Year 12 student Orion added:

“I found it exciting to have the opportunity to match up the live sounds with the visuals on screen.”

The afternoon allowed time for an introduction to the cinematic world of Harry Potter and a tour of the props, sets and costumes used in the films. Highlights included the set of the Forbidden Forest, Platform 9¾, Gringotts Bank, Diagon Alley and to finish an incredible 360-degree immersive scale-model of Hogwarts School. There was even time to stop off for a glass of Butterbeer to stay refreshed!

Daniel Spurr, Media teacher commented:

“It was an educational and entertaining day for all involved and one we hope becomes a regular opportunity for our young people.”
