Geology Fieldwork Completed

Geology students at Solihull Sixth Form College took a fieldtrip to Dudley and Shropshire last week to undertake valuable fieldwork for their A level course.

Learners in their second year of study visited The Wren’s Nest near Dudley and The Ercall in Shropshire and enjoyed beautiful Spring sunshine as they completed practical work. They studied the rock formations present to determine the geological history of both locations and did some fossil hunting at Wren’s Nest to support the work they have been doing in the classroom.

Adam Folbigg, teacher of Geology and Assistant Curriculum Leader for the Extended Project Qualification, went on the trip. He commented:

“It’s always great to get out into the field and put the theory work into practice. The sun shone and the learners really enjoyed the work they were doing.”

As well as looking at rock formations, the A level Geology course also teaches learners about global plate tectonics, palaeontology, natural resources (such as coal, oil, gas, water, minerals, metals) and geohazards (such as volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides).
