Fast Broken at Community Iftar — Solihull Sixth Form College

Fast Broken at Community Iftar

There was a mood of celebration this week as colleagues, learners, parents and community representatives came together for Solihull Sixth Form College’s second annual Community Iftar.

This free event provided an opportunity for those celebrating Ramadan to break their fast, while also offering members of the College community of all faiths or no faith to come together and get a better awareness of Ramadan. Among the special guests in attendance was MP for Yardley Jess Phillips, as well as representatives from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and the Solihull Faith Forum. Trustees and governors from the Summit Learning Trust joined colleagues from the College for the event too.

The event began with speeches in the College lecture theatre as college learners spoke about what Ramadan means to them. The guest speaker was former student Talha Ghannam, who is now an Imam. After the speeches, guests heard the Call for Prayer. Fast was broken with food provided by The Curry and Roti Bazaar.

Anisa Lokat-Fanning, Associate Assistant Principal, commented:

“Following the huge success of our first Community Iftar in College last year, it was wonderful to bring our community together again this year for what was a beautiful celebration for Ramadan. We are proud of our multi-cultural community in college and this event was a fantastic celebration of that. Huge congratulations must go to the team in our Student Development Office, who worked incredibly hard, together with learners from the Iftar committee and student council, to organise such a brilliant event.”

Many of those who attended the Iftar donated foodstuffs, which will be made into food parcels for those struggling with the current cost of living crisis thanks to our partnership with Sewa Day West Midlands.
