Economics Lecture at Aston — Solihull Sixth Form College

Economics Lecture at Aston

Economics students at Solihull Sixth Form College recently attended a day of bespoke lectures at Aston University to stretch and challenge their learning.

The undergraduate-level lectures were devised specifically for our students and covered a variety of topics. The first lecture used info-graphics to demonstrate how Covid has changed the choices households make when it comes to demanding and consuming certain essential goods and services. That lecture was followed by a social and economic experimental game (known as the Ultimatum and Dictator experiment), which demonstrated how the population have become less charitable and altruistic as a consequence of the pandemic.

As well as engaging with those thought-provoking topics, learners were given the opportunity to question the Head of the Economics department and other lecturers on what it is like to study an Economics degree at the university. They also had time to discuss life at Aston University with an Economics and Politics Student Ambassador (a second year undergraduate).

Manish Patel, Economics teacher at the College, commented:

“Our learners had a great day at Aston University and we are grateful to staff at the Economics department for putting on such an interested set of lectures specifically for our students. The subject matter challenges students to think beyond the A level specification, which will help them to get the higher marks. The opportunity to discuss university life with lecturers and undergraduate students was also invaluable, as most of our young people are aiming to progress onto Higher Education.”
