Debate Team win Mace Heat

Learners at Solihull Sixth Form College took part in the ESU ‘Mace’ competition recently and debated their way into the regional heat of the competition.

The College debate team were up against a team from Warwick School, debating the motion ‘This House Believes that schools should focus on maximising students’ value to the modern workplace over a broad and balanced education’. The College team argued against the motion and speakers were Dan Wormald, Habir Sagoo and Jack Henderson. They were well supported by Humza Akhtar, Leah Berry and Charlie Brooks, who asked appropriate questions and carried out the research.

Student Development Officer Ashfaq Ahmed worked with the learners and commented:

“All six learners are to be commended. It was a team effort and everyone contributed. The team will compete in the regional heat of the Mace Debate Competition in the next round. Thanks also go to the staff members from the English Speaking Union for judging the debate and organising the competition.”

The debate was hosted at Solihull Sixth Form College and the learners who took part are part of the Debating Society at the College. This is one of many student societies that learners can join.
