Cooper Journalism Prizes

Two English students at Solihull Sixth Form College have won prizes for their journalistic work this term.

Elsa Lowther and Lily Beddows (pictured above) won first and second place respectively in the Cooper Prize for Journalism competition, which is run to remember a much-loved former member of the English department Chris Cooper, who passed away in March 2022.

Elsa wrote a fascinating article about archaeology focusing on the ethical debate surrounding the study and exhibition of human remains. Meanwhile, Lily wrote a brave and poignant article on grief and the impact of it on her.

Jane McCard, Curriculum Leader for English and Modern Languages at the College, commented:

“Congratulations to Elsa and Lily for their inspiring articles. They both tackled very interesting subject matter and their articles were very thought-provoking. We handed out their prizes at the recent College Awards Evening in front of an audience of staff, students and parents.”

The Cooper Prize for Journalism is open to A level English Language and English Literature students, and members of the Creative writing enrichment course.
