BTEC Art Nursery Mural — Solihull Sixth Form College

BTEC Art Nursery Mural

Visual Arts students at Solihull Sixth Form College have been commissioned to create a mural for The Organic Nursery, based on the edge of the Widney Manor Road campus.

Learners on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design Practice course have been set a live brief by the nursery this summer. They have had four weeks to design and produce a mural for the fence outside the nursery to get experience of what it is like to work to a set brief for a client and to an agreed deadline.

Kelle and Teresa from The Organic Nursery came into College in early July to see the design ideas the students had come up with and based on their feedback, some tweaks to the design were made ahead of the painting of the mural at the end of term. The final design was unveiled recently, much to the delight of the staff at The Organic Nursery.

Creative Arts Curriculum Leader Zoe Maksymiw commented:

“It has been so enjoyable working with staff at The Organic Nursery. The students have learned so much from the experience of working for a real client. Not only did they have to work together as a team, but they had to follow a brief and keep to an agreed timescale. Our young people did all of that so well and I’m so proud of the work they have produced. Their mural is so colourful and welcoming and I’m delighted that I’ll be able to see their handiwork every day when I pass the nursery and come into College.”

Live briefs form a vital part of the Visual Arts courses, offering young people the opportunity to get real-world experience of what it’s like to work on the visual arts sector. As well as our BTEC Art & Design course, the College offers A level Art & Design options, with pathways available in Fine Art, Graphics & 3D Design and Photography.
