Bank of England Lecture — Solihull Sixth Form College

Bank of England Lecture

Economics learners at Solihull Sixth Form College benefited from an online lecture from a representative of the Bank of England last week.

William Durham, Head of Risk Methodology at the Bank of England, spoke to Year 12 and Year 13 A level learners about the role of the Bank of England. He explained monetary policy and the actions that the Bank of England can take to support the UK economy, such as the use of quantitative easing (buying bonds to lower interest rates on savings and loans) and raising or lowering interest rates.

With the UK economy facing turmoil in recent months, he was able to provide some real-world examples of the Bank of England’s work, including discussing how the cost-of-living crisis has hit individuals, businesses and the government itself and how Brexit has impacted the economy. Mr Durham also spoke about the employment opportunities at the Bank of England to give our economists an idea of careers they could pursue.

Economics teacher Manish Patel commented:

“The Bank of England plays a vital role in shaping the UK economy and understanding the work it does is critical for our learners to excel in A level Economics. For that reason, we are very grateful to William Durham for giving up his time to deliver this lecture to our learners. It was a great insight into the work of the Bank of England and the careers advice he was able to offer was also extremely valuable.”
