£850 Autumn Fundraising — Solihull Sixth Form College

£850 Autumn Fundraising

The autumn term has seen a host of fundraising events and awareness raising campaigns taking place at the college, thanks to the hard work of the Student Council, the Volunteering Society, and the of staff in the Student Development Office (SDO).

The Autumn Term culminated in a Christmas Fayre, with money raised for Fisher House, a University Hospital Birmingham charity. A total of £188.09 was raised from the fayre, which will go towards helping injured service men and women and their families. The Fayre saw Yarnfield Primary School and Bentley Heath Choirs singing Christmas songs in college, plus a visit from Father Christmas and free hot chocolate and mince pies for students.

Other fundraising activities this term have included the Macmillan Coffee Morning, Wear It Pink Day for Breast Cancer, World Sight Day for Guide Dogs UK, Children in Need and an Israel and Palestine appeal for the British Red Cross. In total, £851.27 has been raised for charity this term.

A series of awareness raising campaigns have also taken place at the college. These aim to educate learners and colleagues on a range of thought-provoking matters, including dyslexia awareness, ADHD awareness, transgender awareness, and stress awareness. Black History Month and National Bullying Prevention Month have also been recognised with learners having the opportunity to celebrate Black and Brown people and understand the impact of bullying. Finally, the college community came together to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.

The SDO team have received food deliveries from Sewa Day West Midlands. These donations have ensured the College’s Food Pantry, Clothing and Hygiene bank is well stocked to support our learners. This is all part of the Summit Learning Trust’s Base Camp Initiative. This aims to ensure that every learner has the basic needs met to enable them to achieve the highest levels of academic progress whilst being provided with a rich educational experience.

Associate Assistant Principal Anisa Lokat-Fanning, commented:

“I am immensely proud of how the College community comes together to support a wide range of worthy causes. The Student Council and our Student Development Team have worked incredibly hard all term and this is evident by the sheer number of charity and awareness events that have taken place”.
