Radiotherapy Masterclass — Solihull Sixth Form College

Radiotherapy Masterclass

Aspiring medics studying at Solihull Sixth Form College were introduced to the field of Radiotherapy this week, thanks to a virtual masterclass.

Daniel Blair from the University of Liverpool delivered an online presentation to A level students who are part of the College’s Pre-Medical School enrichment programme. These are learners who have elected to join weekly sessions geared towards preparing them for a medical application. All have realistic ambitions to pursue a medical career in the future and their chances are boosted by the activities they take part in during the enrichment sessions.

This masterclass saw young people learn about what Radiotherapy is and what those working in this field actually do, from how the radiation therapy targets tumours to caring for patients and managing their side effects. They were also told about making an application to the University of Liverpool.

Assistant Principal Trevor Irving organised the masterclass. He commented:

“We are grateful to Daniel for giving up his time to talk to our young people. His enthusiasm for the work that Radiotherapy does to help cure tumours and lessen pain in cancer patients was inspiring to listen to and our learners have received a useful insight into an innovative branch of Medicine.”

Upcoming activities for the Pre-Medical School students include a problem-based learning activity with Keele University and a masterclass from Aston University.
