FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the entry requirement for an A Level programme?
For a 4 AS Level programme, entry criteria are:
• At least one grade B at GCSE
• At least a further four grade Cs at GCSE
• You should have at least a grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics
2. Are the entry requirements different for applied courses?
Yes. If you are interested in an applied programme of study, such as a BTEC Extended Diploma or Double Applied A Level, entry criteria are:
• At least one grade B at GCSE or merit on an equivalent * course
• At least a further four grade Cs at GCSE or equivalent *
• You should have at least a grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics
* Courses equivalent to GCSE may include BTEC First Diplomas and OCR Nationals at Level 2. Please note, we consider these other qualifications to be excellent preparation for a BTEC Diploma course, but need to be supported with good GCSE attainment for A Level study.
3. What combinations of A Level subjects can I study?
Almost any combination is possible because our timetable is very flexible. There are a few combinations which are not allowed (e.g. Computing and ICT). These are indicated in the individual course details in the Courses section. This can be discussed at interview.
4. Can I do only three AS levels?
No. Students taking AS Levels take 4 AS subjects in Year 12 and normally 3 A2s in Year 13. If any student wishes to drop a subject midyear they will need to pick another AS Level to take its place – these mid-year courses are detailed in the Other Courses section of the website.
5. If I start an AS Level and don't like it can I drop it?
You are advised to think carefully about your choice because subject change is not usually advisable and may not be possible once lessons have started. In any event, you must continue to study four subjects if you are on an AS programme, which means choosing one of the mid-year AS options – go to the Other Courses section of the website for more information.
