Dr Afshan Ahmad
Trust Governor
I am a Lecturer and Admissions Lead at Aston Medical School at Aston University and a proud governor for Solihull Sixth Form College and the Summit Learning Trust.
I undertook a Microbiology and Immunology degree at Chelsea College, University of London, before pursuing my PhD in Medical Microbiology at the University of Birmingham. I have had a varied career in science and feel that my background in research, teaching, and as Admissions Lead at Aston Medical School, give me a unique perspective on university admissions and careers. I hope that with this experience, I can make a positive contribution to the students in Solihull Sixth Form College. I am also passionate about widening participation in higher education and part of my job at Aston Medical School includes taking part in activities on our widening participation programmes.
My passion is education in whatever shape or form and I believe that given the right opportunities and guidance, most children can achieve the highest of the high. I have personal experience of this with a young refugee I have been mentoring over the years. He achieved a first class degree from University College, London and has just completed a Masters degree from the University of Cambridge.
I have been involved in careers talks relating to medicine at Solihull Sixth Form College for a number of years and would like to get more involved in this educational establishment as I can bring expertise in what Universities are looking for in students applying for careers in healthcare. I am interested in education and in widening participation in universities and, in particular, medicine.
My hobbies include walking (when time allows) and looking after five chickens and two rabbits. I am a grandmother to six grandchildren and try to spend as much time with them as possible.
