Course Overview

Qualification: Applied Courses

(This course is a T Level, which is a 3 A level equivalent course)

  • Equivalent to 3 A levels, this programme combines learning in the classroom with hands on work-based experience. The T level qualification equips learners with core knowledge, skills and experiences that will enable them to work confidently in the industry or progress onto Higher Education.
  • The programme of study has 2 components focusing on education and childcare: Core Knowledge and Occupational Specialism - Early Years Educator. English, maths, and digital skills are embedded throughout the course and learners complete an employee-set project.
  • You will be in college for 3 days per week and in an industry work placement 2 days per week.
  • We have excellent links with the early years sector and students have the opportunity to enjoy 750 hours of real-life, hands-on work experience.
  • A variety of teaching methods and learning experiences will be used ranging from classroom-based activities though to lectures from visiting guest speakers.

Occupational Specialism - Early Years Educator:
1. Support and promote children’s play, development, and early education
2. Develop relationships with children to facilitate their development
3. Plan, provide and review care, play and educational opportunities to enable children to progress
4. Safeguard and promote the health, safety, and wellbeing of children
5. Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, carers, and other professionals to support children’s development.

The Core Component is 100% externally assessed. The Occupational Specialism components are also externally assessed through synoptic assignments, except for the observation element, which is internally marked and externally moderated.

In addition to the standard BTEC entry requirements, a minimum of grade 4 in both English Language and Mathematics at GCSE is required. If learners wish to progress to Primary Teaching, a minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE Science is required. A clear DBS ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’ due to the industry placement aspect of the qualification is essential at approximately £68.00.

Successful completion of this industry recognised qualification means that learners can progress onto early years related employment:
• early years practitioner
• early years educator
• primary teaching and learning support assistant

Learners can also access higher education at degree level:
• Primary Education Degree
• Early Childhood Studies Degree.

Learners will learn through classroom based activities as well as taking part in external trips and visits. Teaching provides opportunities to develop core skills through a range of active and academic learning methods. Learners are also assessed in placement.

Learners are required to complete 750 hours across the 2 year course duration. Learners are fully supported to find placements.

Although the course can lead to direct entry into employment within the early years sector, learners may wish to progress into Higher Education and go to University. Below is an overview of the points that can be gained according to the grade achieved:
