Students Pledge Transport Sustainability

Environmentally-conscious learners at Solihull Sixth Form College attended attended Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's 'Active Transport Ambassador' (ATA) event recently to champion the College's green initiatives.

Students from the Model United Nations and Sustainability enrichment group attended the ATA event on Tuesday 11 February, where they spoke in front of the Mayor of Solihull Councillor Shahin Ashraf MBE and representatives from NGOs including Modeshift, Living Street and Let's Go Zero. Learners presented the College's initiatives to encourage more people to adopt more sustainable transport strategies.

From increasing public transport use to championing car-sharing, our students delivered the College’s goals to the delegation in a professional, articulate manner. For their endeavours, the College has received £200 from Modeshift to help finance our green, sustainable initiatives.

Helen Evans, Earth Studies Teacher and Assistant Quality Leader, leads students on the Model United Nations and Sustainability enrichment. She commented:

"It is hugely encouraging to see how our young people care for the world around them. They worked hard on their presentation to the Mayor and the various NGOs present and their belief in what they were saying was clear to see. We are delighted to have received funds from Modeshift and will put that money to good use to increase our sustainability on campus."

This enrichment is just one of the ways the College supports the West Midlands Lieutenancy's TREAD Lightly programme. This initiative has the support of all the academies within the Summit Learning Trust and aims to adopt strategies that will protect the world we live in and operate in a more sustainable way.
