Students Explore BCU Nursing Opportunities

Health & Social Care learners at Solihull Sixth Form College received an introduction to Nursing in January, thanks to a visit to Birmingham City University.

Year 12 students studying towards their BTEC Extended Diploma Health & Social Care course had the opportunity to experience the department for Nursing and Midwifery , which was led by Marc Alner at BCU. Learners not only got the opportunity to see the facilities and resources at the university, but also had the chance to try out some of the specialist equipment in the department.

Among the staff who gave students the benefit of their expertise were Jim Chapman (Nursing lecturer), Sharon McLeod (Adult Nursing lecturer), Robin Wilkinson (Learning Disability Nursing lecturer) and Sarah Bond (Child Nursing lecturer). This gave learners the opportunity to explore the range of different nursing disciplines open to them for Higher Education study.

Assistant Curriculum Leader Nosheen Hamid commented:

"The visit to Birmingham City University was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to experience a university environment and start thinking about possible Higher Education destinations. Most have ambitions to work in the healthcare professions, therefore the opportunity to meet with academic experts was hugely beneficial."
