French Learners Complete Scoop Journalism Challenge
French learners at Solihull Sixth Form College put their linguistic skills to the test recently when they participated in the Scoop virtual journalism competition.

Going up against other A level Modern Language students, learners from Year 12 and Year 13 joined forces to take on the journalism challenge. The morning-long event was kicked off by a key-note speech from UEFA football journalist Simon Hart. Participants were then introduced to the main challenge, which was created by Business Language Champions to challenge young people in Year 12 and Year 13 who want to use their language skills to work in international journalism, creative writing or design.
The challenge set to learners was to design an advert for a prestigious company to be featured on a newspaper front page. The challenge involved pitching ideas to the Marketing Manager of the client wanting to advertise and then coming up with a suitable design, before presenting their ideas in French.
Carolina Lopez-Garabito, Assistant Curriculum Leader and Modern Languages teacher, commented:
"Our young people all worked incredibly well as a team. Each student took responsibility for a different role to create and design a front page of a French newspaper and then present their ideas to a jury in French. Although they didn't win the competition, they demonstrated great professionalism and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm."
