Ex-Learner Promotes Modern Language Opportunities
A former learner returned to Solihull Sixth Form College this week to talk to current students about her experiences since leaving the College and how A level Spanish has helped her career.
Caitlin O’Neill studied A level Spanish, Biology and Chemistry at the College, with the intention of pursuing a science-based career. However, her study of A level Spanish and the work experience placement she did at the College changed her aspirations. She spoke to an audience of Year 12 and Year 13 Modern Language learners about that work placement, as well as a subsequent placement in Spain with Erasmus, completed during a gap year.
Caitlin went on to study International Tourism Management at Sheffield Hallam University. Since studying, she has enjoyed backpacking, has worked as a tour guide assistant all over Europe and is currently working in a local travel agent. She shared with students how frequently she still uses her Spanish when arranging holidays for customers with foreign tour companies and it has been extremely useful when on familiarisation trips organised by holiday providers (including in Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica).
Modern Languages Curriculum Leader Carolina Lopez-Garabito commented:
“We are so grateful to Caitlin for coming back into College to talk to our current cohort. She was able to explain to them that that when you speak to someone in their own language it often leads to more favourable terms and conditions in business. It was an engaging and inspiring talk and gave our students inspiration for their own future careers.”
