Applied Science Learners Take on CSI Assignment
Science learners from Solihull Sixth Form College recently took on the challenge of becoming crime scene investigators as part of their BTEC studies.

Year 13 BTEC Applied Science students were faced with a simulated crime scene and equipped with protective clothing to assume the role of trainee Forensic Technicians. Their assignment was to search the crime scene for clues that would help solve a suspicious death.
Working under supervision, learners collected, packaged, and labelled evidence such as footprints, fingerprints, blood droplets, hair samples and fibres, ensuring the evidence integrity and maintaining the chain of custody. Later on in the unit, the students will analyse this evidence and present their findings as an expert witness giving court testimony.
Laura Whitby, Assistant Curriculum Leader for Chemistry and Applied Science, explained:
“This is always a popular assignment with our BTEC learners. Wearing protective clothing really immerses them in the experience. They must ensure evidence integrity, which demands precision and focus. The students performed exceptionally well, and for many, it has sparked a deeper interest in forensic science.”
