Uni Medical Masterclass — Solihull Sixth Form College

Uni Medical Masterclass

Budding medics at Solihull Sixth Form College attended a fascinating masterclass at the University of Birmingham recently to support their ambitions to pursue a career in Medicine.

Students on the College’s Pre-Medical School enrichment took the trip to the University of Birmingham campus to attend the masterclass, which was entitled, ‘Drug Discovery Beyond Carbon: A World of Possibilities in The Periodic Table’.

Learners explored the great possibilities of expanding the choice of atoms from the periodic table for drug discovery, including how nature uses metals in a varied range of functions from DNA replication to muscle movement and enzyme activity. They also learned about metal-based diagnostic tools that help scientists to understand disease and therapies that manage arthritis, bipolar disorders and beyond.

Assistant Principal Trevor Irving commented:

“Enrichment is a fundamental way the College extends our students’ learning and the Pre-Medical School is one such enrichment geared specifically towards those young people who have serious ambitions to pursue Medicine. It is a highly competitive field to progress into, but exciting opportunities like this masterclass provide our learners a helping hand towards achieving their dreams. This particular opportunity gave students the chance to explore a fascinating branch of Medicine, while also getting a taste of undergraduate study.”

Forthcoming activities for Pre-Medical School learners include an interactive presentation by University of Liverpool about the work in their Radiotherapy and Oncological department, a problem-based learning exercise from staff at the Keele University Medical School and taster sessions from Aston University Medical School.
