The Sociology of Music

Sociology students at The Sixth Form College, Solihull combined their studies with contemporary music last week with the help of a visiting speaker from Birmingham City University.

First year A level Sociology students attended a talk by Dr Gary Hazeldine, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Birmingham City University. He visited to talk to the students about music in society. The students listened to the number 1 from last week and the number 1 from 2009 and compared the tracks. They considered how there is a clear formula to music creation.

Sociology teacher Charlotte Simmonds commented:

“We are grateful to Dr Hazeldine for giving up his time to come into College. Music is an important part of our culture and it was interesting for the students to apply this aspect of our society to their studies.”

The A level Sociology course deals with many of the issues seen on the News. Some of those issues that students have studied recently include the riots in some of our cities, the phone-hacking scandal, immigration into the UK, the reforms to GCSEs and A levels, the Arab Spring, Boko Haram, issues surrounding the World Cup and sexism in pop music!
