Student Fieldtrip to Berlin

A group of A level students from Solihull Sixth Form College visited Berlin recently to support their A level History and German studies.

Learners on these two A level courses undertook this 4-day trip to the capital of Germany to visit sights of historical significance, including the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial and Museum, the Reichstag, the Plotzensee Prison and the Holocaust Memorial. They also went to the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall Memorial, Check Point Charlie, the East Side Gallery, the Olympic Stadium and they had a tour of the Jewish Quarter.

The sights visited complemented the A level History course, for which Germany history of 1919-63 forms a significant part. Meanwhile, the A level German specification includes study of the film “Good Bye, Lenin”, which is set in Berlin and a knowledge of historical sites in the city will support the upcoming oral exams.

Humanities Curriculum Leader Karen Greaves commented:

“The trip to Berlin was an excellent opportunity for our young people to immerse themselves in German history. The A level specification explores democracy and dictatorship both before and after the Second World War and the places we visited on this fieldtrip supported that learning very well.”

Modern Languages Assistant Curriculum Leader Deborah Smail-Ross added:

“It was great to collaborate with the Humanities department for this trip. Not only were the places that students visited very interesting, but being in Berlin gave our learners and excellent opportunity to practice their spoken German too.”
