The Sixth Form College, Solihull Debating Team have recently secured a second victory in the 2018 English Speaking Union competition.
Participating at Solihull School, the College team was opposing a motion: This House would allow upper rate taxpayers to redirect a significant proportion of their taxes to charities of their choice. The team of Rocio Leano and Amelia Lewis were able to debate with clarity and passion and convinced the judges of the merits of their points. The judges commented that the winners were able to clearly argue their points of view and successfully counter the debating positions of their opponents.
Curriculum Leader Tim Goss commented:
“The team and their supporters are proud of this achievement, but they are keen to progress further in this year’s completion. Experience is improving with each round and the team will go into the next regional heat with confidence.”
Debating Society is one of many student-led societies that run in College. These vary from year to year and depend on the interests of the students each year. This year’s popular societies include the LGBT Society, Anime Manga Society, Gaming Society and the College Health Ambassadors.
