Music Composition Exhibition — Solihull Sixth Form College

Music Composition Exhibition

Music students at Solihull Sixth Form College performed at the Easter Showcase and Composition Exhibition at the end of the Spring Term.

The Showcase provided a platform for first and second year A level Music learners, as well as those taking part in Musical activities as an enrichment, to present their composition work to a live audience.

Composing represents 30% of the marks on the A level Music course. The musicians must produce a composition of at least 3 minutes in length either to a brief or a free composition, as well as producing a chorale harmonisation in the style of J.S.Bach.

Music teacher Catherine Douglas commented:

“I’m proud of the work our young people produced. Performing in front of a live audience is always a bit nerve-wracking but presenting and performing their own compositions is even scarier. They rose to the challenge and the Showcase demonstrated what terrific work they have been producing as part of their studies.”

In the build-up to this Showcase, learners received support from Mark Goodchild, double bassist from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), who came in to offer advice on their compositions.
