Dance students at The Sixth Form College, Solihull developed their choreographic skills thanks to a workshop from a professional dance practitioner this week.
Claire Benson, a dancer from Motionhouse Dance Company, one of the UK’s leading dance companies, came into College to run a half-day workshop with the A Level Dance students. They participated in a contact improvisation and lifts class, before learning a challenging technical phrase.
The dancers worked in pairs and small groups to develop their own choreography, using the skills they learned during the workshop. The Motionhouse dancer was impressed with the quality of work the dancers created and the professional and mature way they approached the workshop.
Dance teacher Ruth Jones commented:
“Claire came into the College last year and the students got a lot out of the workshop and it was great to have that repeated this year. The students all spoke enthusiastically about the workshop, which was challenging and inspiring. The content of the workshop will significantly aid students in their assessed practical work. Incorporating lifts into their choreography is challenging, but will ensure students create innovative and exciting work.”
There will be a chance to see our dance students in action on Monday 12 December (7.00pm), when they take part in the Performing Arts Christmas Showcase at the College. Tickets for this Showcase are on sale, priced £4 for adults and £2 for concessions, by calling 0121 704 2581 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
