Media Studies students at Solihull Sixth Form College went to a screening of hit Hollywood movie “The Joker” this month.
The A level Media Studies students visited Cineworld in Solihull to see the film, which is a 2019 American psychological thriller directed and produced by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix. Set in 1981, it gives a back-story to the character of the Joker, one of the leading villains in DC Comics’ Batman stories.
The film deals with the themes of mental illness and its effects, as it follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian whose descent into insanity and nihilism inspires a violent counter-cultural revolution against the wealthy in a decaying fictional city called Gotham City.
Rasbinder Gill, Assistant Curriculum Leader for Media and IT commented:
“Viewing a major professional work like this helps students expand their knowledge of key theories and broaden their understanding of media. They enjoyed the screening very much.”
