Visual Arts students at Solihull Sixth Form College visited the Ikon Art Gallery in Birmingham last week to see an exhibition of sculptures by eminent artist Barry Flanagan.
The trip was for first year BTEC Art and Design students and the experience will be used by them in their Sculpture unit after half-term. They enjoyed the figurative and conceptual works of Barry Flanagan, emphasising the materials and processes of the creation of the sculptures. The main themes of the brass sculptures were hares, rebirth/renewal and architectural structures and included found objects.
In addition, students also visited the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to see the Thoughts on Portraiture exhibition, which features works from artists like Picasso, Pacheco, Auerbach and Bomberg.
Visual Arts teacher Pam Basra commented:
“The students are fortunate to have two excellent galleries on their doorstep. The works they saw will be directly applied to their studies this term.”
Students on both the BTEC and A level courses will be visiting more galleries during half-term next week, when they travel to Madrid in Spain.
