Fun Day Raises £1,000+ for Charity

Staff and students at Solihull sixth Form College raised more than £1,000 for charity last week, thanks to a Fun Day held at the Widney Manor Road campus.

Student Council and the Student Development Officers organised a day of activities to raise money for Cancer Research UK, in loving memory of former teacher Chris Cooper, who tragically passed away from cancer in March of this year. An incredible £1,012.38 was raised.

College Principal Martin Sullivan commented:

“Chris Cooper worked here within the English Department from 1998 until 2019. She was an incredible teacher and an amazing colleague, with boundless energy and a tremendous passion for education. In making this donation to Cancer Research UK, we celebrate the contributions Chris made to the College and the joy and love of learning she brought to so many. This charity is very close to all our hearts and we are grateful for the support of staff and students alike.”

As well as raising money, the event was also a chance for second year students to come together for a celebration in College, before they focus on their examinations. The activities included a Scavenger Hunt, Funfair Games and a Photo Booth, in which students were encouraged to dress up in their Prom clothes. There was music, drums and dancing, not to mention a host of tasty treats for everyone to enjoy. The food on offer included a burger truck, donut stall, ice-cream van and waffle stand. Candy floss, slush puppies and a bake sale were also available.

Student Development Officer Tina Champion commented:

“So much hard work went in from staff and students alike to make this event a success. It was great to see the students enjoying themselves and I’m so proud of everyone involved for raising so much money for such a worthwhile charity.”

Associate Assistant Principal Anisa Lokat-Fanning, added:

“Congratulations to Student Council for a brilliant event. The elected Student Council Executive have been such a joy to work with this year and represented their peers so well. They have been ably supported by staff in our Student Development Team, so it is no surprise to me that this event has raised so much money. It is a terrific memorial to a valued former colleague.”
