Dance enthusiasts at The Sixth Form College, Solihull were inspired by meeting a former College student who has made it as a professional dancer last week.
A level Dance students went to see Matthew Bourne’s “Cinderella” at the Birmingham Hippodrome and while they were there they met one of the stars of the show, Andrew Monaghan. A student at the College from 2007 – 2009, Andrew is now a principal dancer with Matthew Bourne’s company, New Adventures.
Current students saw Andrew perform and after the show, he took time to talk to our students and share his experiences of being a dancer and the journey he has taken since being a student at the College. Among the things that our students discussed with him were the process of auditioning, his career and what a usual working day being a professional dancer in Matthew Bourne’s company is like. The students also asked about the touring schedule and the demands his roles in Cinderella have on his body. There was also useful advice on what a dance company like Matthew Bourne’s are looking for when dancers audition, which will be useful when current students come to audition themselves.
Dance teacher Rhiannon Waters commented:
“Cinderella was a wonderful show and all the students thoroughly enjoyed the performance. They have been really inspired by meeting Andrew and we are grateful he took time to answer their questions. The students are all working on their assessed choreography at the moment, so the performance and the advice they received was very timely.”
