Dance students at The Sixth Form College, Solihull have been developing their skills with a series of workshops and visits this term.
A trip to the theatre and an in-College workshop have given A level Dance students and those participating in the Enrichment Dance Company Collision, the chance to see professionals perform and get expert tuition.
Among these exciting activities was a 4-hour workshop with Sioda Adams of Earth Bound Dance Company. Sioda, formerly a dancer with Motionhouse, led the group through tasks that introduced them to the skills needed to perform contact work and lifting. Sioda has inspired the A Level Dancers to include these valuable skills in their group choreography for the forthcoming Component 1 Practical examination and the Year 12 Collision dancers, who will be the dancers for these choreography pieces, will now be adept at executing the moves.
Dance teacher Kathryn Waters commented:
“A huge thank you to Sioda for imparting her expertise and also congratulations to the students for their professional approach to the workshop and boundless energy and enthusiasm.”
Many students also visited the Curve Theatre in Leicester this term to see a performance of “Xenos” by renowned professional dancer Akram Khan. This performance incorporated both contemporary dance with classical kathak dance (an Indian form of dance) and portrayed the emotions of a colonial soldier in the First World War.
