Aspiring entrepreneurs from Solihull Sixth Form College have been organising a series of charity events at the Widney Manor Road campus to raise money for charity and learn event management skills.
Students on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business course have an Event Management unit on their course and at the end of Year 12, they split into groups to organise, promote and deliver fundraising events for charity. They put the skills they have learned in theory into practice and are assessed on how well their events are organised.
This year, learners have come up with a range of creative ways to fundraise. Events include a Bake Sale, a Pizza Sale, a Football Challenge, a Basketball 1-on-1 Challenge, a Table Tennis Tournament, a Chess Tournament, a FIFA 23 Gaming event and a Masked Talent Show. Among the charities to benefit from these events were Cancer Research UK, Islamic Relief and UNICEF.
A former BTEC Business student, who has since gone on to set up three businesses of his own was also present on campus this week to offer support. The Events Pizza Company set up their pizza business in the College car park to support the students and also raise some money for Cancer Research UK.
Applied Business Curriculum Leader Pam Hope commented:
“It’s not until you try your hand at organising a charity fundraiser that you realise how much work it entails. Students have had to consider health and safety and complete risk assessments in order to stage these events. They have fully planned and marketed the events themselves and delivered them in College, with the aim of raising as much money as they can for charity. They have worked really hard and it’s been great to see how well they have done.”
