Applied Science learners at Solihull Sixth Form College got out of the classroom to visit a medical manufacturer recently.
Year 12 students on the Extended Diploma Applied Science course visited The Binding Site (owned by Thermo Fisher Scientific). They enjoyed a tour of the laboratories to see the manufacture of medical equipment and took part in a hands-on practical session.
While at the Binding Site, students also learnt about health and safety and discovered the career opportunities available, including apprenticeships.
Simon Windsor is Curriculum Leader for Chemistry and Applied Science. He commented:
“Our learners had already studied this company through their assignment work in Unit 4 earlier in the year, so this visit was an excellent opportunity to see first-hand the work that is done there. They threw themselves into the activities and learnt a lot from the experience.”
Further visits to The Binding Site are planned before the summer holidays, so that all Applied Science students in Year 12 can visit.
