Solihull Sixth Form College boasts exceptional facilities for students to benefit from and the newest addition to those facilities was a sustainably-built Science and Study Centre, which was built during lockdown and opened up to students in September 2020.
The building is known as the Hamilton Centre, in honour of our Vice Principal Janice Hamilton, who cut the ribbon to mark the opening.
Thanks to an investment of nearly £3 million from the Summit Learning Trust, of which the College is a proud member, the new building now provides the perfect environment for aspiring students with the following facilities included in the building:
- Four fully equipped, spacious Chemistry laboratories
- Almost 100 PCs in a Study Centre available to all students
- Another IT classroom
- Three further teaching classrooms
Following construction of the new building, the previous home for A level Chemistry in Blythe building was also refurbished, creating more classrooms for other A level and BTEC courses including Accounting, Business and Law. See more about other Resources and Facilities.
The environmental impact of this building project was central to plans for this facility, as the structure was manufactured sustainably off-site, built by Wakemans Limited (Project Management, Cost Consultants and Contract Administrator) and Modulek (Contractor/Manufacturer).
Construction has started and in early February 2020, Principal Martin Sullivan and some of our Chemistry students were allowed access on the construction site to see the foundations being laid. Scroll down to see the progress of this project from foundations all the way through to completion.
During half-term (February 2020), the construction stepped up with Modulek putting the first of the modules in place. These were constructed off site and were moved into place in sections. This cut down the length of time it took to construct the building significantly and thus decreased the carbon footprint of this project.
The end result was a modern looking building with state-of-the-art facilities, which students have been benefiting from ever since.
