The Mill on the Floss Production

mill_on_the_flossPerforming Arts students at The Sixth Form College, Solihull have formed a theatre company called Edge of Creation and are staging an exciting production next week.

Edge of Creation is presenting "The Mill on the Floss" at 7.00pm on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 June.

It is an intensely moving tale of Maggie Tulliver, a young girl growing up in the village of St Oggs on the River Floss. It’s one of the most affecting inescapable stories of family loss, affliction and fate.

Set in 1820 in a society that is undergoing massive change and upheaval, Maggie Tulliver, the daughter of a miller in the Midlands, has intelligence and emotional capacity that surpass those of her family. Devoted to her brother Tom, who doesn’t understand her fully, Maggie turns to the disabled Phillip Wakem, son of the local lawyer. Affliction strikes when Mr Tulliver and the elderly Wakem find themselves enemies over a legal dispute that leaves Tulliver bankrupt.

Helen Edmundson’s adaptation is a feast of physical theatre, using movement, music, lighting and sound to create Maggie’s world. With seventeen characters to play, the eleven strong cast are superbly adept at bringing distinction to two or three characters apiece, including the central role, which is split into three phases. This wildly passionate and imaginative production is comedic and moving in equal parts and will draw you into the small village of St Oggs.

Tickets are on sale from the Performing Arts department by calling 0121 704 2581. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
