Group 5: Mathematics

The course focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts. You will apply the knowledge you have acquired to the solution of realistic problems set in an appropriate context.

You will cover core topics in algebra, functions and equations, trigonometry, matrices, vectors, statistics and probability and calculus, as well as a selected optional unit in further statistics and probability.

In addition you will be required to prepare two portfolio pieces one of which will be an investigation and the other a modelling exercise.

You will develop a range of problem solving skills, work with others to solve problems, familiarise yourself with the functions of a graphic display calculator and their application to the solution of a range of problems. You will also use a number of computer packages to aid in the understanding and solution of problems, develop strategies for the investigation and modelling of mathematical problems.

Assessment:
80% external examinations; 20% formal internally assessed work, including mathematical investigation involving developing a problem-solving strategy and a modelling exercise requiring the solution of a problem using an experimental approach.

Please note: We are not accepting applications for the International Baccalaureate Diploma for entry in September 2009, but will be recruiting for September 2010.
