Group 3: Geography

This course aims to develop an understanding of the interrelationship between people, place and the environment. Analysing contemporary global issues such as poverty, conservation and sustainability, you will gain an appreciation of the importance of the need to plan and manage for present and future generations. Skills of map interpretation and statistical analysis will also be investigated.

Modules 1-3 are studied at higher and standard level; modules 4 and 5 at higher level only. Students also do coursework at higher and standard level.

  1. Population, Resources and Development - involves the appreciation of population, fertility, migration and the issues surrounding global food supply.
  2. Coastal Management - this investigates different types of coastlines, why they are eroding and the various management strategies adopted. A field trip opportunity to Dorset is also on offer here.
  3. Globalisation - the role of transport, culture and tourism.
  4. Tectonic Hazards - why certain areas of the land's surface are unstable due to earthquakes, volcanoes and mass movement.
  5. Humans and the Natural Environment - how humans interact with the landscape around them in terms of forestry and farming. The levels of pollution in our natural environment and its management is also investigated.

Assessment:
At higher level, 25& of the final grade is based on a fieldwork report and 75% on written examinations.  At standard level, 20% is on coursework and 80% on written examinations.

Please note: We are not accepting applications for the International Baccalaureate Diploma for entry in September 2009, but will be recruiting for September 2010.
