Theory of Knowledge

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) programme occupies a central position in the IB.  It aims to help you understand how the process of gaining knowledge and understanding takes place and to apply this understanding to your own learning on the programme.  TOK will develop your abilities to think critically, to analyse and to appreciate other perspectives through a range of learning activities, including written and oral presentations, discussion and debate and research.

The course will cover 5 main areas:

  1. The role of language and thought
  2. Value judgements as knowledge
  3. The requirements of logical rigour
  4. Knowledge and truth
  5. Systems of knowledge

Assessment is both oral and written. There is an essay of 1200-1600 words and individual or small group presentations.

Extended Essay

This is an independent research project where students explore and investigate a special interest topic of their choice.  The purpose of the project is to give an introduction to the kind of independent study required at university. The outcome is an essay of no more than 4000 words.

Creativity Action Service

CAS is an essential part of the IB. It encourages you to work with others and helps you to develop a greater awareness of your own personal skills. Students should aim to complete in the region of 150 hours of active creative or service projects across the 2 years of the programme. You will also be required to keep a diary of your activities and at the end of the course, analyse and evaluate your achievements. The CAS element for each student will be individually negotiated.

Some examples of activities that can be included are; participation in drama, dance music, sporting activities, peer mentoring, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, charity fundraising events and voluntary service.

Please note: We are not accepting applications for the International Baccalaureate Diploma for entry in September 2009, but will be recruiting for September 2010.
