Extended Project

This is an AS Level course, one of a group of qualifications open to students mid-year, if they wish to change what they are studying.

Overview

The Extended Project requires you to produce a single piece of work of your own choosing, showing evidence of planning, preparation, research and autonomous working.  You will also be expected toresearch, critically select, organise and use information using a range of sources.

Course Outline

You will have to produce a final piece of work which could be either an artefact plus 1000-5000 word analysis or a 5000 word written report or essay.  In addition to the final piece you will also have to complete a detailed log of the process which should reflect deeply on the development of your project. You will have to complete a presentation at the end of the process which also contributes to the final marks. The most successful students also produce a portfolio of evidence that complements the final project and we would highly advise you to record all work completed which should include planning, research and reflection.

Assessment

As 40% of the final marks are based on the final project. A further 60% is awarded to the process – all of the work that you have completed in order to complete the project. Note that as an A-Level you are able to achieve an A* in this subject!

Career and Progression Opportunities

The Extended Project offers an exciting opportunity for you to make a significant contribution to the choice and design of an extended piece of work.  You will also demonstrate your ability to develop and apply decision making and problem-solving skills to a piece of truly independent work. In addition you will be able to hone the sorts of skills required at HE for example showing initiative and enterprise, research and critical thinking skills plus your ability to present analyse and synthesise information. The Extended Project will help students to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that they will need when tackling similar projects in the future such as your undergraduate dissertation.
