BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services

Overview
This is an applied course, which provides opportunity for further study or employment in a wide variety of vocational public services. Teaching will be done partly in the classroom and partly in the College’s Sports Hall, with some field study opportunities.

Course Outline
There are five mandatory units:

Unit 1: Government, Policies and the Public Services Unit 2: Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
Unit 3: Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
Unit 25: Public Service Data Interpretation
Unit 26: Enhancing Public Service Delivery Through the use of ICT

There are then a number of optional units, including:
Unit 5: Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services
Unit 10: Skills for Land-based Outdoor & Adventurous Activities
Unit 11: Skills for Water-based Outdoor & Adventurous Activities
Unit 12: Crime and its effects on Society
Unit 15: Planning & Management of Major Incidents
Unit 16: Career Planning for the Public Services
Unit 18: Behaviour in Public Sector Employment
Unit 30: Practical Team Sports
Unit 31: Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
Unit 32: Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
Unit 33: Volunteering in Public Services 

Assessment
Coursework (100%)
No Examinations
Examining Board – EDEXCEL.

Career and Progression Opportunities
This course provides an excellent grounding in public services, including the emergency services (police, ambulance and fire). However, it is also suitable for those wishing to go into the armed forces (including the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force). Students on this course may also progress into the leisure or retail industries .

Cost Implications
Depending upon the trips or activities undertaken, there may be costs of approximately £600 over the two years on this course.

Other Information
This course may possibly involve a one-week residential course each year, as well as other external visits and talks from guest speakers.

The College runs a Career Academies UK programme. A Business Career Academy for BTEC Business students has been running since 2010 and Career Academies will be launched in IT, Public Services, Media and Science from September 2012 onwards.
